Our brain works in a complexed manner. A sound, a sight, a book can trigger a slew of memories. Even driving down a somewhat familiar road can result in thoughts about the "Life's What-Ifs", conversations in a last meeting, my next holiday destination etc. It's a love and hate thing when I'm in such a state. I basically can't do any work for hours.... This was how it all started.

I was listening to Power 98 and was driving home. This guy called Trent Williams from Perth, Australia was on the radio and was crooning to his fave personal songs. Pretty talented I thought.. Hmmm... he is from Perth, reminds me of the days when I was studying. The Durrow Gals and the Durrow Life.....

Hectic is an excuse...But it has been difficult for me to find time to blog. Even if I were to blog, I would be penning the mundane, the usual and I would be droning on how challenging it would be to juggle between work, friends, and family.

As it is, parts of my life have been in whirlwind. Currently working on multiple projects. Not too sure how this works out in the long run. But I'd gonna try. Makes it even harder when there are expectations stemming from all sides. Anyhow, I'm gonna look at it postively and hopefully bring some light to myself and to my existing dispiriting work environment.

Nevertheless, recent events have been encouraging...Friends from Brussels and KL visited Singapore and me trying to be a good host, brought them to Sentosa and Clarke Quay etc...

It's really heartwarming to see friends whom you have not touched base for a long time and even more amazing to know how friendships withstand the passage of time. That's what I love about life. Raw and unpredictable....

A string of nothings and then Laos

I have been staring at my laptop for the past one hour, but got nothing done. Tight deadline. But nothing done. Think I am mentally exhausted...earlier, I spent two hours in the evening surfing about trans-siberian rail journeys. It's times like these where you feel like dropping everything, pack your bags and leave.

It was the pits today. Gotta call from her. She needed money again. But I actually ignored her today. Enough is enough....How much help can you offer someone? Where are the boundaries? Should you be blamed if her kid's sick or she's out soliciting "business"? How can you help someone if the person doesn't even help herself? Had enough of the excuses. Ditto.

Hmmm....basically just random string of nothings. Anyhow, I just returned from a trip to Laos. A place where simplicity is at its best. Friendly people. Cheap and good food. You'll feel like you are transported to an era where technology is pretty much non-existent (okay..exaggerating here..). Well the good thing, time is always on your side. You don't see hoardes of people on the streets, plentiful cars on the roads..just good ole rustic nature offering its best. I love Laos.

Oh...I really tried a bug. Haha

A bus ride

Realised that I have not been updating. The past year has been somewhat fulfilling and at times, heartbreaking.

Fulfilling in a sense as I made more friends, continued my travelling adventures, accomplished and learnt much at work, and also, solidified relationships with friends and family I care about.

On the other side of the bridge, I had to bade farewell to a relationship I held closely to. We were in different stages of our lives. We had different goals and were from different cultures. I'm not sure whether it was a hasty decision when we left off at the airport but it sure was heartbreaking. I once was told that life is like a bus journey. People enter your life, similar to the passengers in the bus. Some passengers enjoy the bus ride with you and thus, they linger a little longer. Others come and go. But ultimately, many passengers alight. We are basically left with the memories and imprints of each departed passenger.

No matter what, the bus journey must continue. Friends get married and have kids. Some get promotions at work. Babies are born and people die.

As for us, it's unfortunate that we had different destinations. But I now know that your bus journey will be an amazing one, one that follows your dream and I too, will follow mine. =)

Schloss Neuschwanstein

Axel and B.B showed me around for that day, bringing me to two castles: Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Linderhof. I have been to plentiful castles, mansions, and palaces in my past travels, but this castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) had to be the most fairytale and beautiful one. It was basically used as a model for Sleeping Beauty's Castle in Disneyland. This castle was constructed by King Ludwig and he imagined his castle as a giant stage that would allow him to re-create the world of Germanic mythology immortalised in the operas of Richard Wagner, whom he worshipped at that time. In the background are breath-taking mixture views of a dramatic waterfall, mountaintop mist etc....

I vote this to be one of the new seven wonders of the world....

This Austrian old town , famously known for its birthplace of Mozart and the scenary that accompanied "Sound of Music" is charming, picturesque and elegant. The city is dotted with side cafes selling aromatic coffees, tasty cakes and tons of tourist shops with overlapping displays of Mozart Memorabilia. One can't help but notice the Festung Hohensalzburg, a fortress seated in Salzburg's high point. Getting to the fortress means taking a ride aboard the Festungsbahn, Austria's oldest funicular railway. Spectacular views on-top.....

Nested outside the old town is a town that embodied outmoded flavours captured in the 70s..preferred the altstadt.

One can't miss Chinesischer Turn...During weekends, this place livens up with traditional entertainment by the "world's drunkest oompah band", music soothing when one is half drunk. Much said, I love the relaxed atmosphere...one can't ask more with good food, beer, weather and relaxing Sunday afternoon.

Bavarian Cuisine

Bavarian food is hearty, meat-driven and vegetable-lacking. Days of consumption may lead to constipation (kidding). If there's something I really like, it has to be the wide variety of German bread and bier. Forget about Gardenia white bread and Tiger...Germany breeds wholesome tasty bread and Bavaria is among one of the most productive beer regions in the world. Beer also takes centre stage at numerous festivals, the most notable one, of course the Munich Oktoberfest.

Well, for breakfasts, it's also another hearty affair, consisting of different types of cheese (kase), bread (brot), cold cuts, jam and eggs (ei).

As I was making my way to the bus terminal in Heathrow airport two weeks ago, I was welcomed with a slew of HSBC's ads. I have seen these ads painted on walls in Singapore's train stations but was never able to relish them due to the helter skelter lifestyle. This time, I had the opportunity to revel them at my own pace. On a travellator.

Designed to promote HSBC's standing as the world's local bank, the new Your Point of view campaign offers a refreshing thought to celebrate people's differences by voicing common oppositions to various topics. There was one particular one that caught my eye, one ad featuring a cat and a pug with words imprinted love and loathe, and vice versa. I love pugs, but I have heard of many who cohesively thought it was an ugly "piece of animal".

This concept I learnt today, after watching "Half-Nelson" starring Ryan Gosling" is called Dialectics. Side tracking a lil, I highly recommend this movie. It shows the friendship between an idealistic high school teacher with a drug habit and a troubled student. He rejects the conventional curriculum and instead, takes an edgier approach and emphasizes dialectics in many of his classes. Basically, dialectics is a tool to understand the way things are and the way things change. Dialectics highlights the following three points:

Everything is made of opposing forces/opposing sides
Gradual changes lead to turning points, where one opposite overcomes the other.
Change moves in spirals, not circles.

In this movie, you'll see the dialectical theme playing multiple times: the teacher and student relationship, the "black" student and "white" teacher, ideals vs rules and systems, the adult teacher and the child student. Despite the differences, they made changes in their lives which resulted in positive turning points.

I was just doing the usual city Glasgow saunter: admiring the charm of the Victorian buildings, scrutinizing the locals and conducting my own "globalisation" analysis by counting the staggering number of Starbucks and identifying similar stores that could be found in major cities. I ended up in a typical bookstore, browsing their "bestsellers" and then the travelling section.

Yes..I saw the Frommers, Lonely Planet etc. As they had a huge selection, curiosity overwhelmed me and I wanted to see whether I could find travelling books on Singapore. I glimpsed at the "S" section, but no books on Singapore. Alas! The travelling books on Singapore were actually found on the "M" section, together with travelling books on Malaysia. Where is the geographical sense and knowledge? Having a lil nationalistic pride, I transfered the whole set of travelling books on Singapore to its rightful hearthstone. Hah...

Oh well...

This Royal Yacht was launched by Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953. She took Prince Charles and Princess Diana on a honeymoon cruise aboard Britannia in 1981. She was also used to evacuate refugees from a civil war in '86. The last foreign mission was to convey the last British governor of Hong Kong, Chris Pattern, away from Hong Kong for the handover of the British colony to China in 1997. The Yacht was decommissioned in the same year.

The bedroom picture shown above belonged to Queen Elizabeth. During its sails, it carried plentiful royal yachtsmen and officers. Look at the cramped accommodation area as well as the small locker spaces (look at pictures above).

As seen from the picture, Angela (my host) prepares delicious hot breakfasts every morning coupled with loads of fruits, cereals, toasts and tea. Yummy! On the plate, you see this round black thing. It's what they call it as the 'black pudding', made of pig's blood and herbs. Ain't that bad at all!

I also had the opportunity to taste haggis, a traditional Scottish Dish. It is normally made with the following ingredients: sheep's heart, liver and lungs, minced with onion, oatmeal, spices and salt, and traditionally boiled in the animal's stomach for approximately an hour. And of course, you gotta try their whisky.

Besides the traditional restaurants, one finds cuisine from all around the world, particularly Indian and Thai food.

Last week, I made my way to Scotland and visited two amazing, vibrant cities: Edinburgh and Glasgow! Before I show you some pictures, let me give you some interesting information about Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Edinburgh, (where the "burgh" is always pronounced as "burra") is a city filled with historic, literary and intellectual associations. Some familiar names from this city include pioneer economist ADAM SMITH, philosopher David Hume, inventor Alexander Graham Bell, and poet Robert Burns. The city dons a historical feeling, with the cobbled alleys and "closes", and elegant streetscapes.

Glasgow, on the other hand, is a much modern city with plentiful art galleries, music halls, shopping malls and stylish bars. Although Glasgow is a short distance away from Edinburgh, the contrast between the two cities is noticeable. It doesn't offer a fairy tale setting such as Edinburgh, but compensates with a big, metropolitan city.

The Last King of Scotland

Went to watch "The Last King of Scotland" with Stephen, Sumo and Weeter. Needed some time off amidst the haywire. =p These guys are great fun...after the movie, all of them donned on the african accent, endeavoring to mimic the late "Father of Uganda". Oh well, not too successful as they ended up being Fathers of Jamaicans!

I don't have much knowledge to comment on how much the movie reflected the truth. After all, it's a hollywood movie. Events could be exaggerated, most characters might be fictional..who knows? I did some googling and instead, found some comments from viewers rather amusing.

"I think many nations could learn from goverments like the US. We never have a leader in power long enough for them to become insane like Amin, Saddam, or Kim jung ill. I also wonder when I look at all the past comments how many people of the world would give up voting in their own election just to vote in the US elections.

"- Must be from the US and he must be delusional. I seriously wonder who is the CURRENT MOST INSANE LEADER...

"I am a ugandan living in europe. Am sick and tired of people in the media, books protraying Amin as an evil, heartless man,comparing him to Saddam, which he wasn't. Call me ignorant, selfish or just pure neglect. I did not care a hoot about mother nature. I detested environmentalists who went on streets and in unison, generating what I termed as "noise". To me, they were the din creators.

Okay. But recent incidents did tug me. First, the continuous rain or flash floods that many of us experienced in Singapore, the freakish cold weather in the US, floods in Jakarta, extreme weathers in Australia...this is quite crazy. We humans, are basically responsible for conditions that will cause killer heatwaves, floods and droughts. Sea levels, a particular concern to Singapore because of threat of flooding here, will rise by 18 cm to 59 cm!

So here I am trying to create a lil awareness. There is only this much legislation can do, it all boils down to us....let's get real, change the attitude and the lifestyle.

I hate goodbyes

In our lives, we constantly deal with goodbyes. I come to a point whereby I have recognized this fact and have acknowledged that it’s part of life. I guess one has to accept that everything is transient and we should just make the best of the situation. Especially with the incessant traveling, one can’t avoid the inevitable goodbyes. The uncertainty of when and whether you will see the other person in the future coupled with all the good memories you had with the other makes it even harder to bade farewell. This farewell at the airport, like the many others that I have encountered over the past year, was depressing and tearful. In many sense, this was more significant as I have known Natalie since nine and have been really good friends since fourteen.

She has been such a gracious host, spending time with me every night and the whole of the weekend. Although I only spent a fleeting 6 day trip, it could never been better. Daily dinners with Natalie, occasional ones with her family, the clubbing night at San Francisco, shopping on Sunday and the trip to Carmel made my trip really fruitful.

This may seem mushy, but I really feel blessed and fortunate. I can never ask for any better with these true friendships and my loving family.

Salty Soy Bean?

Much credit and thanks to Oliver, colleague whom I knew from the project. He spearheaded and carefully planned such a successful day trip that all of us enjoyed ourselves.

We started the day with a delightful brunch at this Taiwanese place. We had soy bean, salty soy bean (something which I am not customized even till now- see the picture above), noodles, and Taiwanese pancakes.

Freak Weather and Jet Lagged

As usual, after my flight to the US, I am awake in the wee hours of the morning. Not able to sleep as it's night time in Singapore. I gotta work, but I don't have the mood. So I'm just idling my time away. Browsing TV channels, surfing the net...pretty aimless nonsense.

US is experiencing some icy weather. Even in LA, it's freaking snowing! CNN reported that people in that area were taking photos, amazed by the sudden change in weather. Icicles are found in many citrus trees in Orange Grove, California. "It's estimated that 70% of the state's citrus crop has been ruined by the severe cold, and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency." - CNN

Hmm...time for breakfast. A long day ahead. Kambate Grace!

A brand new year 2007

I have not been blogging recently. Too much activities during the Christmas and New Year Season - mainly due to Monty's visit to Singapore and my trip to Phuket.

Oh well, Sayonara 2006. It has been a fruitful year. The highlight was the hefty travelling. Countries covered include Spain (Cordoba, Seville, Granada, Malaga), Switzerland (St. Gallen, Zurich), UK (Gibralter Island), Germany (Hamburg), Indonesia (Bali), Thailand (Phuket), USA (San Francisco, San Jose), Malaysia (Penang), Taiwan (Kaohsiung), China (Shanghai). Hah..10 countries this year. I hope I can travel to more places....cover more areas...this year.

This year, I shan't have any new year's resolution. I pretty much fulfilled all of mine last year and I need a break. So this year.....take it easy.=)

Some of you may know Chin Teong. He went on stage as one of the top three best dressed, danced to some indian music and ended the night winning the third prize! Is he lucky or what?!?!

Yes...Christmas season is coming. Finally. But I am boggled with work and other miscellaneous stuff (shopping, organizing my department's Christmas party, singing in TAGALOG with some colleagues, rehearsals, meetings, preparation for Monty's arrival ....). Yawnnnnn........

Hah...my boss approved my leave to stay the weekend for my upcoming trip to Fremont again. Haha....very nice.

Back Home...Singapore

Each travel has its story and chapter. Similarly, this trip to San Jose brought with me fulfilling and learning experiences. Within the two weeks, I realised and appreciated how important interpersonal relationships are. With no car and no eating places within 1 km radius (quite handicapped) , I am blessed to have friends and clients who unrelentlessly brought me out for meals. Natalie brought me out for dinner meals every night and even when she had to go to Sacremento for training, her sister, Huiyan brought me out, which was a totally enjoyable experience. This may sound over-emotional, but I saw plentiful goodness in the old and new friends I made. It was sweet and comforting to witness an encounter of how love transpired in the weirdest and unexpected manner, how a father took great care of his son, and how a younger sister worries the well-being of her older sister.

Just feel fortunate to have friends like that......=) Really means a lot. Natalie, if you are reading this, luv ya.....looking forward to seeing you again!

Petrie is my favourite dog of all time. I got to love pugs because of Petrie. Ugly to many, adorable to me!!! Look at her and her fur coat! haha....The last time I saw her was four years back. Right now, she's fat (with all the folds of meat) and when she walks, her swaying stride with that huge butt is a comical sight. Pearlene, get a pug instead!

It's 4am here in San Jose and I'm still not sleeping!! Brain is messed up..haha...

Anyhow, so far so good. I have been hanging out with Natalie in the evenings and during the day, at the client. All I can remember is gorging down huge portions of food for every meal. I've tried in-and-out burgers, local Singaporean food (which I have to say is pretty good), french cuisine and the typical steak, fries, and loads of cheese...oh yeah..and the morning bagels, love them! I am bursting..Gotta head to the gym when I return.

Just realised I look really tired....Christmas break is coming!

Newspapers and Work Travel

On Wednesday, I lugged my travel suitcase into the world’s “finest” airport early in the morning for my trip to Penang and I was surprised to see huge hoards of people queuing at the counters. Many of them carried only a laptop (I guess they were returning for the day). I felt like I was in a train station, eking to embark on the usual boring train ride. But somehow, this was a little different. I was enthralled bout the idea that I would be transported somewhere into a different environment and WORK.

What I love most is to read newspapers on the plane. Heck the droning sounds of the plane taking off. This activity is just pure joy. I mean at home, I hardly have a good read. And even if time permits, I’ll allow myself a quick browse, which subsequently, I would end up cracking my head with the daily Sudokus. Yes. Sudoku. I enjoy solving them although I used to think these puzzles were quite lame and a waste of time. I still think it’s a waste of time but I guess it’s the pleasure and satisfaction one gains from getting it right that really matters. On the plane, there are no outside distractions: no phone calls, no SMS, no bugging work emails. Just myself and my newspapers. I can give my utmost attention scrutinizing every word, every picture, every advertisement. One finds so much delight that I found my neighbour sitting beside me reading the newspapers OUT LOUD (hmmm…I guess he was from China and he was practicing his English).

Having the local newspapers at hand with a cup of coffee for breakfast is an enjoyment. There is no other way but to know a country or city better by interacting with the people or by reading their local newspapers. Well, for the one that I was reading for the past few days called the New Straits Times, the contents were mainly local politics (of which one was focusing on religious rights). By venturing into the colour supplements, one can imagine the lifestyle of the locals: what they like to eat, how they spend their money, what ticks the people. There is something about this that I feel privileged, almost illicit, like scouting through a person’s diary.

Newspapers and having a cup of coffee to start the day were nice. But subsequently, I’m back to the whole routine of having more work to be done. If there is a skill that I have learnt being a consultant, it’s the skill to remain calm even when I am flustered and worried all inside. Managing the client is a key. By showing your weakness is like admitting defeat and a total faux pas. I guess this is what many politicians may feel. Admitting to the fact that attacking Iraq may be a complete blunder and how the whole Iraq situation is mismanaged would be a disaster. How can the world’s most powerful person go all dog-eyed and seek for pardon? This is similar to the Shin-Corp scandal where it’s hard for the government-owned company to admit taking the wrong move. The Bangkok Post wrote: “What is most problematic in the Temasek-Shin Corp deal is a foreign government-owned company buying up assets, deemed as tainted by the Thai public, that are owned by the family of Thailand's most powerful person who is actively in the highest political office. As such, it is not a routine business transaction. The buyer is not an ordinary individual but ultimately a foreign government. The seller is not an ordinary corporate entity but ultimately a business domain of its prime minister. This is a deal where the buyer should have been mindful of the integrity of the product being offered. Few with respectable moral and ethical standards would want to come into ownership of a tarnished product, no matter how good a bargain it may seem.”

Oh well, enough about my ramblings. My eyes can carry bags so heavy now that they can win the weight lifting Olympics.

$491 million record for auction

In just three hours on 8 Nov, 78 Impressionist and modern paintings, drawings and sculptures were at Christie's (New York) for $491 million!

This painting "Adele Bloch- Bauer II" dated 1912 by Gustave Klimt was sold for $87.93 million. Coincidentally, this painting is currently sitting on my wall of my study room. The restitution by the Austrian State in March 2006 of the Klimts and other works to the heirs of Ferdinand and Adele Bloch Bauer contributed to the stunning success of Chrsitie's sale. This was followed by the annoucement of a gigantic price of US $135 million reportely paid for the other portrait of Adele Bauer (I) which is now hanging in the Neue Galerie Musuem in New York. This painting paid by Ronald Lauder will be a centerpiece in the Gallarie. His collection has for years attempted to recover Jewish-owned art, mostly Germany and Austria, that had been confisticated or looted by the Nazi Government. Lauder's comment on the acquisition for his Neue Gallerie collection "this is our Mona Lisa".
